Telangiectasia are small dilated capillaries or broken blood vessels. Spider angiomas are star-shaped or resemble the legs of a spider. They commonly occur on the face especially around the nostrils and cheeks.
Rosacea is a common chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects about 14 million Americans. Symptoms of rosacea include blushing or flushing of the face, red bumps or pustules, itching, burning. They have more telangectasia or spider viens. In severe cases, rosacea can cause skin thickening and disfigurement. It can rarely lead to a condition called rhinphyma that is characterized by a bulbous nose.
Even though IPL FotoFacial RF can treat small telangectasia or rosacea, larger blood vessels will require stronger and more specialized lasers. The LVA applicator of the eLaser made by Syneron is designed treat this particular problem, by ultilizing a laser whose wavelength is preferentially absorbed by the hemoglobin in the blood vessels.
Other lasers useful in treating telangectasia are the pulsed-dye laser. Larger telangectasia on legs frequently will require injection sclerotherapy in conjunction with laser treatment.
