Photodynamic therapy TOP
Photodynamic therapy is a novel way of treating acne and rosacea, and is an alternative to using oral antibiotics and topical medication especially when such measures fail. A photo-sensitizer, Amino-Levulinic Acid (ALA), is applied to the skin surface and is absorbed by the bacteria in the acne. A special blue light such as the Blu-U or the acne applicator head of the eLight from Syneron is directed to the skin. The special blue light would activate the ALA photo-senitizer that has been absorbed by the bacteria that cause the acne. The result would be the destruction of the bacteria that cause acne without damaging the skin cells.
